The valley of Hermigua

The valley of Hermigua belongs to the aboriginal territory of Mulagua. You’ll find it just after the last tunnel on the road from San Sebastián.

It has black stone pebble beaches with excellent views to Mount Teide. There’s also a natural swimming pool here, that’s been carved into the rocks near the pier.

If you want something more secluded, head off to La Caleta beach. It’s just 15 minuetes away by car. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can reach it by foot. It will take you around 45 minuetes, along various hiking paths. Once you arrive you’ll see a small bar and a restaurant surrounded by palm trees.

The village of Hermigua is divided into two parts; the upper part, called "el Valle Alto" and the lower part called "el Valle Bajo".

The upper part was the first to be inhabited. This is where you can see the stunning Santo Domingo de Guzmán church, and its convent, which were built between 1515 and 1520.

The upper part is home to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, which was erected in 1650.

The C.I.T Rural of La Gomera provides maps, tourist information, as well as tour guides. The Rural lodging booking centre has lists of places you can stay in various rural locations.

There are plenty of good walking routes in this area and many of them start here in the village.

From here you can walk all the way into the heart of the Laurisilva forest in the Garajonay national park. The landscape here is incredibly dense, but very lively and colourful. Along the way, you’ll pass by El Cedro’s helmet, where there are a number of old houses that have been turned into top class rural lodgings…

Another route takes you from the San Juan's Hermitage to Los Acevinos' hamlet. A lot of the people here work all year round maintaining the park.

There’s a traditional band here called "Los Parranderos de Hermigua". They play in many local events throughout the year. If you get a chance to see them, don’t miss it! They play an excellent combination of drums and percussions.
