Trekking in Hermigua, La Gomera, Spain

This is an amazing trek through some of the most spectacular scenery on the island. It’s very steep. You’ll trek all the way up Hermigua's cliff right up to the very top. The views are stunning; you can see all the way out over the valley below and beyond to the Teide mountain and Agulo village.

The route takes you right up to the top where you can stop off at the National Park's Visitors Centre and then it travels down again towards Agulo village and then onto Hermigua.

The grounds on the top have a strange red colour; very lunar-like. It’s wise to take a break here, before heading back down. The visitor’s centre provides extensive cultural and geographical information and displays them in a useful and attractive manner. There’s also a bar and restaurant here.

As you travel down you’ll pass by a rich and varied range of flora including: Canarian pines; aeoniums; palm trees; euphorbias and Sonchus (which are massive dandelions).

There’s a fascinating variety of birdlife to be seen during the trek. There are numerous colonies of puffins and if you’re lucky you might even get to see some buzzards, which are massive when you see them up close.

This is a truly spectacular trek. But be warned, if you don’t have a head for heights, you might be better off taking a different route.
